In 2014, 45 crates of looted antiquities were discovered in Geneva Freeport belonging to notorious dealer Robin Symes. The crates contained tens of thousands of archaeological remnants looted from southern Italy worth approximately £7 million.
Box 3, Box 16_01, Box 26_01 (2021) is a multi-channel installation that focuses on a selection of Polaroids discovered amongst the crates of Robin Symes. A specially devised algorithm scans the images in detail, conducting an infinite search. The Polaroids contain incidental details that provide evidence for the processes adopted by the illicit trade – restoration materials, photographic equipment, newspapers and tools. Some images depict hands holding fragments aloft, always severed from bodies by the frame of the photograph. The hand-painted artefacts depict beasts, warriors, gods and nymphs. These mythological and forensic details come into focus through the algorithm’s steady gaze.
